Targets and job opportunities of the PhD program

Targets of the PhD program

The EEST PhD course promotes the achievement of autonomy in research, in particular the ability to produce scientific publications and other research products. Autonomy is also expressed in the acquisition of the skills and abilities for conceiving, designing and implementing research and innovation programmes.
The course promotes a deep knowledge of the territory, the marine and terrestrial environment with particular reference to the monitoring, analysis and valorisation of resources. Main topics include geological knowledge and management of the physical and biotic environment, geo-resources, soil and subsoil, water, ecosystems and plant habitats, solid and liquid wastes, contaminated environmental matrices, secondary raw materials.
These studies are fundamental for improving resilience to climate and environmental changes, protecting nature and biodiversity, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the water system, and protecting and promoting the natural environment also with a view to remediation, circular economy and green economy. Phenomena such as coastal erosion, hydrogeological instability, desertification, pollution, salinisation of coastal plains, and loss of biodiversity highlight a strong need for land protection, also in agreement with the UN 2030 Agenda.

Job opportunities

The EEST Doctoral program trains experts in advanced scientific research in the field of geosciences and environmental sciences.
The EEST PhD researchers are trained to face and solve the needs of the territory, of the society, and industry, also with reference to modern challenges, and opportunities, of sustainable development and green economy.
The doctoral program can facilitate career advancement in academy and/or in research organisations, but also employment in companies interested in enhancing their competitive advantage/technological innovation. The applicative character of the PhD program gives good opportunities for jobs in private companies and industries in the field of environment, infrastructure and mining, as well as in public administrations such as, among the others, Environmental Agencies, Emergency Management, National Parks and Natural history Museums.
